Een distributeur zorgt ervoor dat de vonk wordt verdeeld over de bougies om de auto te starten. De distributeur maakt deel uit van het ontstekingssysteem van de auto en wordt gebruikt om de hoogspanning in de bobine op te wekken die vervolgens naar de cilinders van de motor wordt gedistribueerd, dit gebeurt door een vonk die via een Hall-sensor wordt doorgegeven waardoor het brandstofmengsel in de cilinders ontbrandt. Als de distributeur van de auto versleten is, kan dit betekenen dat de auto weigert te starten en problemen kan veroorzaken.
