Alle ontstekingssystemen voor moderne benzinemotoren gebruiken bobines voor dezelfde basisfunctie. Een bobine in het ontstekingssysteem van een auto zet de accuspanning om in de duizenden volt die nodig zijn om een elektrische vonk in de bougies te creëren om de brandstof te ontsteken. In moderne systemen wordt de distributeur weggelaten en wordt de ontsteking elektronisch geregeld. Er worden veel kleinere spoelen gebruikt met één spoel voor elke bougie of één spoel die twee bougies bedient (bijvoorbeeld twee spoelen in een viercilindermotor of drie spoelen in een zescilindermotor).
